Abstract : The feasibility of using metal oxide varistors in electromagnetic pulse surge suppression connectors is currently being investigated. Toward that end, dielectric constants of four varistor types are found to be between 700 and 1000 at 1 kHz, decreasing by approximately 25 percent at 65 MHz. Dielectric constants as a function of temperature (-65 to 165F) are also reported. When used as the suppression element in a type N coaxial connector, the large capacitance will limit transmission bandwidth to frequencies below 10 MHz. (Author)
