Abstract : The timeinvariant optimal linear regulator is analyzed for singleinputsingleoutput systems. A correlation is made between the elements of a weighting vector and the conventional figures of merit, such as magnitude of peak overshoot and time to peak overshoot. Nomograms are developed for third and fourth order allpole plants. Leake's method of Bode plot analysis is extended to a general weighting vector, resulting in expressions for minimum gain for which nomograms are valid. An algorithm is presented for obtaining rootsquarelocus plots for general quadratic weighting matrices. A suboptimal design is achieved for an aircraft pitchcontrol system, using statevariable feedback with constant coefficients. (Author)
