Abstract : The evaluation of semiconductive metal fluorides as cathode materials for lithium batteries containing organic electrolytes was continued. N-type cadmium fluoride in single-crystal form was tested. Cathodic discharge measurements were made on miniature porous electrodes containing several different n-type CdF2 powder preparations with cadmium or indium amalgam as a conductive additive. Some fabrication procedures that may lead to the desired improvement can be suggested as a result of this preliminary study. These methods include metal vapor plating to provide good electronic contacts and electrode formation. The preparation of semiconductive transition metal fluorides by incorporating an excess of the corresponding metal into the fluoride crystal structure was also investigated. The fundamental basis of this approach is discussed in some detail, and the results of initial experiments on MnF2 and NiF2 are reported. Some indications of successful doping were obtained, but further work will be required to evaluate this approach. (Modified author abstract)
