Abstract : It is the purpose of this study to take an initial step in the analysis of the inter-relationships between man, his works and his environment in the case of the Chao Phraya River delta of Thailand. From the limited information available, this paper will atempt to answer the questions when, how and why were the canals built. At the same time, this description and analysis of the hydraulic works will be seen in the larger context of the development of the Thai state, suggesting, in some cases, the effects which canal and waterway maintenance projects have had upon the course of the history of Thailand.
