Abstract : By means of multiple regression analysis, two regression equations have been produced which can be used as aids in predicting the rate of rise of large scientific balloons. The predictors in the equations are quantities that are routinely available in balloon flight operations. Free lift was found to be important as a predictor of ascent rate only in the stratosphere. In the troposphere, atmospheric pressure and temperature lapse rate are effective predictors of departures of ascent rate from overall mean ascent rate. (Author)
