Abstract : A detector has been developed for the spectral measurement of neutrons over a fluence range of approximately 1.5 x 10 to the 8th power of 5 x 10 to the 11th power neutrons/cm squared and in the energy range between 3 and 20 MeV. The detector consists of a radiator whose nuclei are elastically scattered by neutrons, a degrader which reduces the energies of recoil nuclei transmitted through it, and a recorder capable of registering the tracks of energetic recoil nuclei. The detector offers the advantages of compactness, stable sensitivity, permanence of recorded data, and insensitivity to background radiations. There are no flux effects present or limitations due to reaction half-lives. Computer programs are provided for calculating track densities from detector measurements (FLUENZ), for determining the angular response of the detector (SLANT), and for the unfolding of neutron spectra (HENDU).
