Abstract : An infrared integrated optics technology for use in the 10 micron region of the spectrum is being developed comprising the active signal processing modulation functions (temporal and spatial) as may be applied to a CO2 laser transmitter and heterodyne receiver system. Companion programs address the passive waveguide components, hybrid interconnection coupling techniques, wideband heterodyne detection and the CO2 local oscillator requirement all employing an integrated optics approach. It is concluded that an electro-optic phase modulator composed of GaAs waveguide, GaP or GaAlAs as the substrate and As2Se3 as a superstrate is preferred; while for a surface elastic wave Bragg modulator, a Ge waveguide on a GaAs or GaP substrate used as the piezoelectric surface wave source is preferred. Designs using these preferred material-structures have been implemented with compatible planar processes and demonstrated; however, further characterization and optimization in the 10 micron region is required.
