Abstract : An experimental investigation was carried out on the evaluation of aerodynamic means of controlling the glow-to-arc transition of a dc discharge in a flowing medium. Results were obtained on the effects of pressure, pressure drop, discharge length, and electrode configuration. These tests were conducted in a specially designed apparatus capable of producing electrical laser plasma conditions in a working fluid of nitrogen. The data indicated a large effect of turbulent pressure drop on the maximum power capable of being loaded into a glow discharge prior to the onset of constriction. (Author)
