Abstract : A relationship between a new electronic measure of stimulus information or entropy and human response was investigated. In the study, letter legibility thresholds were measured in nine subjects when the letters had different amounts of information as determined by the electronic measure. Threshold magnitudes varied inversely and rectilinearly with information. Letters most frequently missed at threshold were those having the most information per unit area. It was concluded that the information measure could be used successfully to study many complex visual stimuli ranging from meaningful pictures to display. (Author)
