Abstract : In 1961-1962 a standard set of procedures was developed for the fermentation and chemical purification of griseofulvin. The initial producer strain for the antibiotic was strain 964, grown on the standard nutrient medium no. 14b; the composition of the nutrient includes glucose, lactose, corn extract, etc. The average activity obtained by the standard procedure was 600-900 mg per liter of liquid culture medium under flask conditions, and 500 mg/l under fermenter conditions. The following modifications were made for isolation and purification of griseofulvin: Replace medium 14b with medium 14zh, which leads to an increase in activity from 800 mg/l of liquid culture medium to 1000-1100 mg/l, and also to a reduction in expenses for the raw material; use the countercurrent method of extraction; apply blowing of the methylene chloride from the mycelium. Realization of these measures makes it possible to reduce the cost of the preparation by half.
