Abstract : A nonconcerted reaction is given the operational definition of one for which the transition matrix, which fully describes the reaction, factors such that no transition matrix element connects any state of reactants with any state of products directly. The factorization leads to the concept of an intermediate with quasistationary states and is illustrated for two cases: a single resonance and a complete statistical complex. In such cases symmetry rules (Schuler, Woodward and Hoffman) are derived with stated approximations by using scattering theory and taking into account nuclear and electronic motion. By means of some examples the analysis is compared with frequently used qualitative notions about nonconcerted reactions. (Author)
