Abstract : The generation of short pulses at 10.6 micrometer, basic properties of infrared lasers, and metal vapor lasers emitting in the blue-green were investigated. Significant developments include a Brewster angle acousto-optic modulator for high power mode-locking, a technique for pulse shaping based on gas breakdown, identification of gas breakdown as a limitation on high-pressure laser operation, a transverse-flow copper vapor laser operated at 50,000 pps, use of Ne as a buffer gas for high repetition rate copper vapor laser, and the absence of lasing from Bi vapor.
