Abstract : Upon irradiation by a laser flux with power density of 30,000 cal/sq cm sec cracks are formed on the surface of the molybdenum monocrystal. Expulsion of the molten mass is not observed in this case. Upon irradiation of the same monocrystal by a laser flux with power density of 100,000 cal/sq cm sec the damaged zone becomes separated from the molten mass and is surrounded by lines of deformation. The creation of cracks and lines of slippage may be explained by the high rates of cooling of the zone adjacent to the damaged zone.
