Abstract : Research was conducted on two different but related aspects of the manner in which acoustic waves can be used in the interaction with optical waves. The first aspect concerns the problem of scanning optical, or light, patterns with acoustic surface waves. The second aspect concerns the problem of optical display where certain optical-acoustic interactions are used to deflect an optical beam in a controlled fashion that is suitable for display. Section II of the report presents results of work on the scanning of optical patterns. Section III discusses the problems that are encountered with an acoustic two-dimensional scanning system. Section IV presents concepts which underlie the optical display system which incorporates both acoustic surface waves and optical guided waves.
