Abstract : Thermochemical dissociation energy of NO2 is known to be 40, 973/cm. It was suggested that predissociation could not be responsible for the above dissociation products. Instead, two other dissociation processes, giving N + O2 and O + NO, were considered probable. The authors present photochemical evidence that the above predissociation leads to O(singlet D) atom production. It is proposed that the rotational excitation energy distribution in the ground electronic energy could be supplementing the 'apparent' energy deficiency. (Modified author abstract)
