Abstract : Experimental data are presented for the effect of a Q-switched laser pulse on steel in vacuum and in air. Metallographic analysis of the affected region is performed. Upon the application of a pulse to Fe foil, destruction of the material occurs along the grain boundaries. The microhardness of steels in the affected region differs substantially from that of the base material (by a factor of 2). Analysis of the results shows that, along with the gas-dynamic displacement of the material for a pulse duration of approximately 10 to the -7th power sec, heating effects also play a role. It may be assumed that within the damaged zone, effects are generated which are similar to the detonation of an explosive at the surface of a solid. (Modified author abstract)
