Abstract : Stored cells exposed to varying degrees of acid during an incubation period of 120 minutes were found to fall into three patterns. The minimally acid series was essentially similar to the control without acid. Cells exposed to markedly acid solutions (pH less than 5.5) had a slower change in pH, and a greater incidence of hemolysis than all others. A third series with a moderately acid pH was observed to have less hemolysis and still retain the rise in pH similar to the control series. A sufficient differential existed in this group to suggest that it could be used to test for other adverse effects. (Author)
