Abstract : A set of governing equations is derived for the vertically-averaged velocity, density, and thickness fields in a time-dependent, nonlinear, two-layer model of coastal upwelling. The model includes the effects of the earth's rotation, bottom topography, an atmospheric pressure gradient, short and long-wave radiation, latent and sensible heat flux, horizontal and vertical turbulence, and retains both barotropic and baroclinic modes. Surface, interfacial, and bottom stresses and vertical mixing based on a parameterization of boundary and shear generated turbulence are incorporated in the model. (Modified author abstract)
