Abstract : An analytical and experimental program has been initiated for the determination of the response of gun barrel materials to high loading rates at elevated temperatures simulating that of actual weapon barrels during firing. The analytical part is concerned with the development of a new theory which takes into account the strain-rate, viscous and high temperature effects. To provide quantitative values for various parameters in the analysis a test vehicle and instrumentation concept have been obtained for measuring strains, pressures and temperatures of thin-walled cylindrical specimens subjected to simulated weapon firing conditions.
