Abstract : Indonesia is becoming increasingly influential in Southeast Asian political affairs; it has the potential for leading other Asian nations into an era of political stability and economic progress. A short historical summary is presented which establishes the strong nationalistic sentiments of the Soeharto government. The struggle of this ex-Dutch colony to achieve independence, and its narrow excape from Marxist domination are reviewed and serve to explain its fundamental foreign policy of non-alignment. The successful efforts of the Soeharto government to achieve internal political stability and economic development are examined as well as its external social and economic alliances.
