Abstract : At present the security of the US is dependent upon the mobilization of a land force comprised of 55% from the Active Army and 45% from the Reserve Components. Historically, past mobilizations of the Reserve have been only partially or marginally successful. The reasons for the past unsatisfactory mobilizations were inadequate equipment; inadequate training; and unsuitable organization and DA policy on recruitment. To correct these inadequacies and to improve the readiness posture of the Reserve, a structuring of the Reserve, providing for a mix of Active Army and Reserve components for training purposes coupled with a change in recruitment policy and the issue of modern military hardware, is a necessity if the Reserve is to fulfill its role in the U.S. Military Strategy.
