Abstract : The objective of the research was to produce an animal model of thrombocytopenia by intraperitoneal administration of myleran. This model could then be used to evaluate transfusion of stored platelets. By intraperitoneal injection of a total dose of 60 mg/kg of myleran into rabbits, a profound thrombocytopenia was consistently produced with the platelet nadir occurring 14 days after myleran injection and with thrombocytopenia persisting for at least nine days. Hematocrits remained above 32% and white blood cell counts stayed above 4000/cu mm. Coagulation studies were not affected. This (thrombocytopenia was severe and unaccompanied by any serious effect on the other formed elements of the blood or on the coagulation system.
