Abstract : The influence of residual impurities on the ductility of unalloyed uranium has been studied by measuring elongation, reduction in area and hardness. It is shown that the ductility increases with decreasing residual impurities. Maxima of 40% elongation and 35% reduction in area have been measured after 18 hours annealing at 500C. A discussion of the influence of impurities in terms of the formation of precipitates, the creation of athermal stresses and segregation to grain boundaries is given. (Author)
