Abstract : The report is the ninth in a series of summaries on the use and development of the NRL 5-MV Van de Graaff accelerator and associated instruments. In this reporting period (1 January to 31 December 1973), for the first time anywhere, a measurement to determine dose-rate effects in the simulation of neutron damage to reactor materials with 2.8-MeV nickel ions has been made. The nickel-ion flux was changed by a factor of 100, all other parameters being constant; the relationship between specimen swelling and temperature was determined for two fluxes. New species of ion beams are now available from the 100-keV ion-implantation accelerator; this apparatus has been used for many optical and electron device-related implantations. The very successful operation of the modified Hill-Nelson sputtering ion source in the Van de Graaff has opened the way to a wide variety of metallic ions with MeV energies. A new digital-optical telemetering system has added significantly to the efficiency of Van de Graaff operation. (Modified author abstract)
