Abstract : The report covers the development of an all mechanical device for controlling guy cables as vertically erected masts are raised and lowered. Controlling the guy cables is essential in maintaining verticality of the masts when subjected to wind loads or other horizontal force components in order to assure safe operation during erection and retraction phases. The device developed under this program employs the use of Weston Brakes to control the guy cables, permitting a vertical erection or retraction while under the full control of the mast launcher operator. Heretofore, automatic guy wire control devices required the availability of electric power, or in a manual control technique the employment of additional personnel at each guy control cable to safely erect and retract masts with heavy antenna payloads to heights greater than 50 feet in winds of between 15 and 25 mph. In its present prototype stage, the Weston Brake Control Device with Mast AB-864 has operated successfully during the erection of a 90 pound antenna to a 50 foot height in a simulated 25 mph wind condition. This device should be capable of operating with any vertically erected type of mast. (Author)
