Abstract : Several novel scanner concepts were conceived and investigated. The purpose of this work was to find a way to reduce the complexity of imaging and tracking systems. The resulting identification of the Rho-Theta scanner as a promising candidate led to a concentration of effort on this concept. The rho-theta scanner would utilize two superimposed circular reticles; one reticle bearing a radial slot and the second reticle inscribed with an Archimedian spiral slot. The two reticles would rotate and the resulting resolution area would scan the device field-of-view. Geometric and mechanical design considerations were investigated. It was concluded that a rho-theta scanner could be fabricated in breadboard form, and the concept is now ready for exploratory development. (Author)
