Abstract : During the years of 1969 to 1973, an investigation on the virulence of Entamoeba histolytica strains in Korea was carried out in series. Samples were collected from various parts of Korea, and the sources were from cyst carriers, dysentery and liver abscess patients. Altogether, 19 strains among the obtained were subjected for the investigations. By ultrastructural observation, some structural transformations were found according to ecological and environmental demands. No difference on temperature adaptation was recognized between the strains originated from pathogenic and non-pathogenic states. The strains originated from the former showed higher virulences than the latter in experimental infection. Each strain showed its own antigenicity, though the antibody demonstration appeared more in clinical cases than in asymptomatic cyst passers. As a final summary, no essentially non-pathogenic strain of Entamoeba histolytica was recognized in Korea. (Modified author abstract)
