Abstract : A technique to determine both loading and unloading material properties from a single impact experiment was developed during this study. This method yields the complete release adiabat from a single experiment. During the developmental and proofing stages, experiments were conducted on Plexiglas, granite, basalt, and sandstone. A complete loading response curve was obtained for most materials tested, and, in all cases, a peak Hugoniot point and the complete release adiabat were determined for all modes of material response. The results and analysis of the experiments clearly show the advantages of obtaining the complete release adiabat from a single experiment. The principal advantage is that fewer assumptions are necessary when this technique is used than when previously developed techniques are used. Another important advantage is that costs are lower because fewer experiments are required. The experimental technique, gages, methods of analysis, and material response curves are presented and discussed in this report. Some comparisons of experimental data with those obtained through the use of other techniques are presented. (Author)
