Abstract : The rocks comprising the Choco volcanics, a formation crossed by the proposed Route 25 sea-level canal through northwestern Colombia, have been categorized as intermediate strength rocks on the basis of their unconfined compressive strengths, which range from 4600 to 8400 psi. They also have been found to slake in ethylene glycol. It is concluded that the factors of intermediate unconfined compressive strength and slaking will not cause massive slope failures of crater slopes formed in the Choco volcanic rocks.
