Abstract : The essay traces the Inspector General system from its inception in the US Army on 13 December 1777 to the present. It highlights the period after World War II, the problems associated with this period, and their impact on the effectiveness of the Inspector General system today. Three elements to success of the system are considered along with recent actions to improve the system.
