Abstract : Inelastic laser scattering and resonant optical pumping techniques have been used to study relaxation processes in magnetic solids. Large cross section light scattering has been observed from orbital excitations in FeF2 and this has enabled Debye-Waller factors to be measured. A new mechanism of optical phonon relaxation in which the phonon decays resonantly into a pair of magnetic excitations has been proposed to explain anomalous relaxation in CoF2 and some evidence of it found in RbNiF3. Resonant optical pumping has been used to measure the loss of phase memory of optical excitations in MnF2 and a search made for resonantly enhanced two-photon absorption in CdS. Resonant enhancement of the Raman scattering cross section has been observed in the paramagnetic d-band semiconductor FeS2. (Author)
