Abstract : A digital flutter mode control system (FMCS) was designed for a large flexible-bodied aircraft. The NB-52E was selected as the model because it was previously used in the design of a continuous-time FMCS by the Air Force Flight Dynamics Laboratory. The mathematical model was reduced to a workable size by eliminating the sensors and control surfaces not used in the design, and by truncating the high-frequency bending modes. The transfer functions for the flaperon and outboard aileron control loops were obtained, and root-locus techniques were used to synthesize feedback filters. A suitable sampling time was selected, and the feedback filters were converted to recursion equations using the Tustin algorithm. A digital simulation program was written to obtain the open and closed-loop time responses of the aircraft. (Modified author abstract)
