Abstract : A comprehensive survey of existing information on the fauna and flora of Johnston and Sand Islands in the central Pacific Ocean is presented. This is based on nine years of biological and ecological data collected by the Smithsonian Institution and other organizations. Extensive files of raw data on biology, published and unpublished reports, and assistance of many individuals contributed to the report. Information is also included on the history, geology, climate, water movement, and changes caused by human intervention. This report presents baseline data on the plant and animal species with their distribution, abundance, and variation in population sizes for the years data are available. The report forms the basis for an Environmental Impact Statement preparatory to proposed actions which could produce ecological effects. (Modified author abstract)
