Abstract : The research was designed to assess the relations between judgments that people make and metric features of the environment (physical distance). Experiments were performed in which people made judgments of the vertical distance to an airplane that flew overhead at varying altitudes. A pilot experiment is reported of slant range judgments to aircraft at varying distances, at angles of thirty and sixty degrees above the horizon. Results of one experiment are included. These results show that judgments of time-to-touchdown of motion-picture simulations of landing approaches are unaffected by the experience of the observer or the steepness of the approach.
