Abstract : The report attempts to answer the major questions concerned with the ecological consequences of applying massive quantities of herbicides (346,117 pounds), via repetitive applications, over a period of eight years, 1962 - 1970, to an area of approximately one square mile. Moreover, the report documents the persistence, degradation, and/or disappearance of the herbicides from the Test Area's soils and drainage waters and their subsequent effects (direct or indirect) upon the vegetative, faunal, and microbial communities. The active ingredients of the four military herbicides (Orange, Purple, White, and Blue) sprayed on Test Area C-52A were 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T), 4-amino-3,5,6-trichloropicolinic acid (picloram), and dimethylarsinic acid (cacodylic acid).
