Abstract : Vestibular and visual mechanisms are critical sensing systems in spatial orientation and in spatial disorientation. In aviation or space environments in particular, the role of the vestibular system is central to the problems of spatial disorientation and 'pilot's vertigo.' A question of significant concern in this regard has been centered around the possibility of abolishing or reducing undesired vestibular responses (inaccurate experiences of motion and eye movements which could blur vision) by repeated exposure to appropriate stimulus conditions. The present report reviews research conducted on this question. The review is generally restricted to activity and responses from the semicircular canals of the vestibular system. Methodological problems are presented briefly and the influence of arousal on vestibular responses is detailed. Data obtained from animals and from man are treated separately.
