Abstract : The development of a model of the human vertebral column is investigated. The model is assumed to consist of only linear elements and only axial response is considered. The intervertebral disc is modelled by a chain of Kelvin elements in series with an impact spring. The vertebra is modelled by a Maxwell element in parallel with a spring and in series with a mass. The response of the model is shown to correspond closely to impedance results at the elemental level but the model of the combination of three vertebrae and two discs gives results which are low when compared to experimental impedance results.
