Abstract : Objective techniques have been developed to aid the meteorological analyst in depicting the concentric structure of tropical storms from digital satellite brightness data. The first technique consists of a linear filter which is designed to enhance concentric brightness patterns while suppressing large scale background features. A second algorithm was developed for finding the probable center of curvature among concentric brightness elements. The programs have been tested for cloud patterns from one tropical storm in various stages of development as well as for several other common patterns of actual and simulated cloud brightness. The results show that (1) enhancement of a tropical storm with a concentric filter can delineate the major concentric features of the brightness pattern, (2) a realistic center of curvature can be computed from elements of the concentric brightness pattern, and (3) the method can detect weak concentricity that may go undetected by a human analyst.
