Abstract : The amplification coefficents for the products of burning acetylene-air mixtures and expansion through a supersonic nozzle have been measured as functions of the stagnation parameters and the acetylene concentration in the original mixture. The largest amplification coefficent is 0.006/cm, which is nearly three times greater than the predicted value for our particular nozzle geometry. It is shown that when a shock wave propagates in a gas having a population inversion there is an initial increase in the amplification followed by a rapid transition from amplification to absorption.
