Abstract : The report generalizes previous work on discrete sequential search for a single stationary object by Black and by Smith and Walsh. In the case treated by Black, false alarm probabilities are zero. In the case treated by Smith and Walsh, they are allowed to be positive but are required to be constant from location to location, as are also the detection probabilities. If detection probabilities are allowed to vary with location but false alarm probabilities are constant, the present report shows how to construct a sequential search policy which, for each n, maximizes the probability of correctly locating the object within the first n steps.
