Abstract : An X-ray powder diffraction technique similar to one used for determination of quartz content in industrial dusts has been applied in determining the weight fraction crystallinity of glass-ceramics. The weight fraction of nepheline (Na2O.Al2O3.2SiO2) in partially devitrified glasses in the Na2O.Al2O3.SiO2 and Na2O.Al2O3.Nb2O5.SiO2 systems was determined and found to be in good agreement with determinations made by other analytical methods. This method is of particular value with Glass-ceramics because it is rapid, independent of mass absorption of the sample, and, therefore, independent of other crystalline (or amorphous) phases present and accurate to plus or minus 4%.
