Abstract : The World Data Center A of the National Academy of Sciences selected two periods in February and December 1970 when the magnetosphere was particularly quiet so that the effects of magnetic disturbances on ionospheric and geophysical phenomena could be studied by their absence. These WDC 'quiets' were studied using AFCRL data on scintillations at 136 MHz from ATS-3 and measures of total electron content (TEC). An additional period in January 1971 was also selected when the magnetic indices were abnormally low, with the minimum daily Kp value reaching 0.0. (Modified author abstract)
