Abstract : Oxygen consumption, rectal, hypothalamic, ear pinna and back skin temperatures were measured during 10 to 20 minute periods of heating and cooling the preoptic-anterior hypothalamic tissue in three resting dogs while unanesthetized or while anesthetized with a chloralose-urethan mixture. Cooling the environmental temperature to 15C and again heating the hypothalamic temperature to 42C or cooling to 32C had no effect on the metabolic rate and very little effect on the vasomotor tone of ear pinna vessels in the dog anesthetized by an initial dose of chloralose-urethan anesthesia and by supplemental doses at 30 minute intervals.
