Abstract : Adsorption of ions from solution is an important process in both photochemical and thermal electron transfer reactions on solid semiconductor surfaces. Isotherms are presented for the adsorption of silver ion from solutions of different ionic composition onto thin film and single crystal titanium dioxide surfaces. In every case the data fit the Langmuir model for adsorption. The effects of hydrogen ion, temperature, and the presence of silver nuclei on the degree of silver adsorption are considered. A mechanism is proposed in which the nature of a specific surface site in the Langmuir model is identified. These data and the implications of the adsorption mechanism are discussed in terms of their relationship to studies of the reduction of silver ion on titanium dioxide surfaces. (Author)
