Abstract : The work examines the enhancement or resonance effect of Raman scattering from water vapor using a thermally tuned ruby laser tunable through a range of 0.9A in the vicinity of 6943.8A vibrational-rotational absorption line of water vapor. The Raman scattered signal is observed with a photomultiplier and oscilloscope display scheme, and the incident light intensity and wavelength are monitored by a fast-rise photodiode and Fabry-Perot interferometer, respectively. The water vapor Raman signal has been observed with good signal-to-noise ratio and its Raman scattering cross-section relative to nitrogen has been measured. However, no resonance Raman effect above the shot noise of the photomultiplier is observable. Possible explanations for the lack of observed resonance, both due to theoretical and to experimental reasons, are discussed. (Modified author abstract)
