Abstract : The objective is development of a prototype-production process for making aircraft-aerospace quality precision castings. The process would use powdered metals as a charge to be inductively melted directly in 'lost wax' molds (with integral 'make-up' hopper) while under the added gravities of centrifuging force and in a vacuum or inert atmosphere. Literature search indicates that inductive melting of powdered metals (if possible) would require very high frequencies. The versatility of melting various metals would require a broad frequency range, necessitating multiple frequency generating units. Experimentation confirms that the powders are not meltable at moderate frequencies which do not present radiation hazards. The dubious feasibility of melting powdered metals, the radiation hazards of very high frequency generation, and difficulty of transmitting appreciable power at these frequencies, together with equipment economics, dictate that the concept of inductively melting powdered metals be abandoned. Future effort should explore feasibility of melting chunks susceptible to commonly used frequencies in a hopper integral with but separated from the mold by a gate or valve.
