Abstract : Efforts were continued to explore the feasibility of making ferroelectric optical displays from lanthanum-doped lead zirconate titanate (PLZT) and from epitaxial films of bismuth titanate (Bi4Ti3O12). PLZT showed good switching speed but device evaluation was hampered by the poor quality of commercially available material. Progress was made in fabricating a matrix-addressed bismuth titanate display with good contrast and retentivity but problems resulted from the stress exerted by the substrate. Solutions are presented for the problems encountered in both materials. (Modified author abstract)
