Abstract : The goals of this theoretical research are: (1) to determine a more accurate and consistent theoretical model of the excitation, emission, and deactivation properties of the N2(+) molecular band systems excited by electrons; (2) determine a consistent set of electron impact excitation cross sections for the electronic states of N2 over the range of incident electron energies that is relevant to understanding and predicting atmospheric processes; (3) with these excitation cross sections, perform the theoretical studies necessary to obtain a better understanding of the excitation, emission, and deactivation properties of the various N2 band systems excited in the normal and disturbed atmosphere. The following are discussed: the Meinel band system of N2(+); theoretical work leading to study of autoionization; electron-impact excitation of electronic states of N2; and, quadrupole moment and electric field gradient of N2 (X singlet Sigma(g)(+)).
