Abstract : The Kaiser FP-50B flight director system was evaluated to determine its operational characteristics when installed in the OH-6A helicopter. The evaluation was performed by workload analysis both with and without the flight director under simulated instrument conditions. Tests were conducted at the United States Army Aviation Systems Test Activity, Edwards Air Force Base, California, from January to August 1973. The flight director installation improved flight accuracy for all phases of instrument flight and generally reduced pilot workload. The system also allowed operation over a wide range of flight conditions with essentially no change in workload. The cathode ray tube display provides a clearly visible, parallax-free indication of the flight director commands. (Modified author abstract)
