Abstract : A new method, based on information-theoretic considerations has been introduced to help formulate questions and obtain model-free answers for the role of energy in the chemical change. Measures for the selectivity of energy consumption, the specificity of energy release and their interdependence have been introduced and applied. Apart from the purely phenomenological application of the information theoretic measures, initial studies have begun towards a more fundamental understanding. One line of attack is the thermodynamic one. In this way one can relate different reactions or the same reaction under different initial considerations. An alternative approach is the 'statistico-mechanical' one where one seeks to relate the information theoretic measures directly to the potential energy surface.
